Is a cardiac heart cath and open heart capabilities important for hospitals in large communities?
I live in a community of over 600 thousand people. I was shocked to find out there is no hospital here that does open heart or even interventional cardiac angiograms. If you think this is unusual or even unsafe please send a letter of support to www.openheartgwinnett.org
One of the problems that communities often face but don't really understand is the allocation of health services. Hospitals don't just pop up and open whatever departments that they "feel" like. If so, they would only open money making departments and leave the non money making aspects of medicine to "some other unlucky bozo" or another hospital. These things are often decided upon by the state or city government. If you need to lobby, then you should talk to your local political representative.
Should all large communites have access to cardiac cath OHS capable centers? I certainly think so, but that certainly flies in the face of fiscal realities.
