What is Gold Filled Jewelry
Gold-filled hand stamped jewelry is a great way to wear the elegance of gold, without paying the hefty price tag. Gold filled jewelry is much less expensive than traditional gold jewelry because of the process utilized to manufacture.
Gold filled starts with a core metal, usually brass, copper, zinc or an alloy of these metals. This metal can be used in making costume jewelry and is often called a “base metal.” After this core is constructed, the gold layer gets added.
Common karats of gold covering are 12kt, 14kt, 18kt, or 24kt. This layer of gold is added to the base core with heat and pressure. This layer is much thicker than gold plated items, about 50 to 100,000 times thicker. This makes it last much longer than gold-plated items because it is a thicker layer of gold and uses heat and pressure to adhere to gold, rather than electroplating the gold which is how gold plated items are manufactured.
When shopping for gold filled hand stamped jewelry, be sure to ask if the gold is single clad or double clad. Single clad gold filled has the layer of gold on only one side. Double clad gold filled has both sides of the pendant covered with gold. Obviously for longevity reasons you will want to purchase gold filled jewelry items that are double clad. This guarantees your skin will not be irritated by the base metal or cause an allergic reaction. It will also help keep your gold filled jewelry looking beautiful. Gold filled items will last 5 to 30 years depending on usage and how well it is cared for.
