Driving through a Tunnel
A tunnel is by definition a dangerous place to be in. Driving into the tunnel, you suddenly find yourself enclosed with solid walls to each side, with only a narrow shoulder line to either side. Your eyes have to get used to the lower levels of light and your ears have to get used to the higher levels of noise. Coming out of the tunnel, you again have to get used to the open road and the bright sun light (when driving in the day). So, how to get across it safely?
The basic rules of driving apply here: A well maintained car that will not break-down in an unsafe location inside a tunnel, remaining alert and perfectly concentrated in the task of driving and looking far ahead - are all to be applied in a tunnel. Talking over the phone should be particularly avoided around tunnels, the tunnel requires your full concentration and besides, the noise inside it and the lack of cellular signal makes it impossible to have a normal discussion.
Your eyes should be looking far down the road, so you see the tunnel in advance. The problem with tunnels begins with entering it and also when exiting it, so to be safe you need to take all of the necessary measures before actually reaching the tunnel. See it coming and anticipate the changing lighting conditions.
Stay in the right lane before the tunnel. Lane changes and passing other cars is generally prohibited, and in any case not desired, anywhere before, inside or coming out of a tunnel. Stick right and slow down slightly, depending on the speed limit. A good rule of thumb is to slow down by 5 to 8mph from the national speed limit before the tunnel itself and "play the gaps" to keep a clear area alongside you in the lane to your left.
Entering the tunnel is a particularly dangerous situation of getting used to the darkness (give yourself at least five seconds for this) and losing the safety margin of the open shoulder to your right, hence the need to slow down and keep an open "escape route" to the left. Also ensure that the following gap of the car behind you is sufficient. If not, slow down more. Keep the speed low towards the exit, since it takes about three seconds to get used to the daylight. Keep your headlights on early before the tunnel and until well past it.
